The NPA is an assessment that allows Versus to identify the user's strengths and limitations in brain performance and to select a tailored performance protocol. The NPA is completed by progressing through two sections in 1 uninterrupted sitting, wearing the Versus headset. The two portions of this assessment are comprised of one resting states task (eyes closed (EC)) and a continuous performance task (CPT).
Overall the NPA can range from 15 to 25 minutes once started and will require an active High Speed internet connection. When taking the NPA, it is extremely important to not have any outside distractions (phone/talking/movement) or the results and subsequent exercise may be affected. Be sure to disable notifications (Do Not Disturb mode) and use the provided audio cable to connect the headset to your iDevice.
Eyes Closed Baseline Task
Duration: 2-10 mins.
While completing this section, relax your mind and body to achieve a restful state. When started, you will be prompted to remain still and quiet for the duration of the test. Audio cues will alert you when the test is completed.
Practice CPT (Continuous Performance Task)
Duration: 1 min.
This is a practice CPT in order to familiarize you with how the test works. The CPT indicates how your brain functions over a long task with varying levels of challenge. There will be a series of images representing either a Target or Non-Target shown on the screen. Tap the screen only when a Target is shown. You may tap any area of the screen. Make sure to use a single finger, as multiple taps at a time will provide inaccurate results. No audio cues are present in this test, to avoid any artificial distractions.
Full CPT (Continuous Performance Task)
Duration: 11 mins.
This is a full 11 minute continuous task that indicates how your brain functions over an extended length task with varying levels of challenge. There will be a series of images representing either a Target or Non-Target shown on the screen. Tap the screen only when a Target is shown. You may tap any area of the screen. Make sure to use a single finger, as multiple taps at a time will provide inaccurate results. No audio cues are present in this test, to avoid any artificial distractions.
Tips for successfully completing an assessment
The NPA is a detailed mapping of your brain and requires very precise data be collected from the headset. Because the assessment is so targeted, some users will find that they experience difficulty with headset connection, or not getting enough 'good data'. Below are a few tips that may help with completing the NPA successfully:
Make sure to apply sensor conditioner to each of the headset's 5 sensors before starting the NPA.
If your eyes are susceptible to dryness, apply eye drops before beginning the NPA.
Posture can have a big impact on the quality of data the headset can collect. Be sure to sit up straight, and orient your phone so that you are not hunched over and that your head is not facing down.
If the headset becomes uncomfortable, remove the headset and take a 15 minute break to get up and walk around.
Be aware of muscle movement and fatigue. As the CPT nears it's end, you may inadvertently tense up, or feel your eyes start to strain. If this becomes uncomfortable, remove the headset and take a 15 minute break to get up and walk around.
If you wear contacts: Remove your contacts and use glasses while taking the assessment.
What is causing errors?
Not enough good data? There can be a number of factors causing this message to be shown. Below are the most common reasons for this.
Inadvertent muscle tension including: Eye strain, jaw clenching, touching/moving the headset, yawning, leaning over (causing the headset to disconnect), talking, excessive blinking, teeth grinding, eyebrow movement, leg movement, moving the iDevice between hands.
Bad Headset Connection: If the sensor disconnection window is continually shown, return to the Main Menu and complete a Warm Up game. This will help to identify if the headset has a stable connection, in which case you will complete the warm up with no errors or sensor disconnects. See the links below for more information.
